Under direction, the purpose of the position is to serve legal documents pursuant to statutory guidelines within the Civil Division of the Broward Sheriff's Office. Employees in this classification perform routine field work as prescribed in Chapter 48 of the Florida State Statutes. Position is responsible for the delivery, recording and distribution of legal documents including, but not necessarily limited to, non-enforceable writs, subpoenas, and criminal summons. Performs related work as directed.

Receives and prepares various forms of legal documents for service of process.
Transfers incorrectly assigned papers, and documents the transfer of such accordingly.
Locates persons on available information and attempts to obtain correct addresses if service addresses are incorrect or in the defendant/respondent has relocated.
Receives assigned papers and develops route schedule in a manner conducive to time and economic efficiency.
Operates a vehicle in the service of process for assigned zone.
Serves various types of writs in accordance with State Statutes concerning classification of writ, i.e., juvenile, corporate, court orders, mental health, small claims.
Utilizes various maps and other location sources in plotting route schedule and determining service locations.
Utilizes radio communications equipment while enroute for the purpose of conveying and receiving messages.
Responds to telephone inquires concerning service of process of legal documents; provides resolution, information and direction accordingly.
Maintains documentation for all papers served according to address, name of party, and type of writ; ensures returns of service are accurately completed and documented.
Trains new employees in effective service of process, to include instruction in managing confrontational circumstances.
Performs related work as required.
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks involve the ability to climb stairs. Tasks are performed in outdoor environments. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, e.g., heat, humidity, inclement weather, hostile persons, hostile animals. Tasks include regular exposure to traffic conditions, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.
